Pere Marquette Fishing report for late December. The river is low and clear. Probably as low and clear as I have ever seen it. Having said that the fishing is better than I would have expected it to be. Also with rain and melting snow pack, the next few days river levels should come up with some much need stain to the main stream.
The indicator fishing has been bringing a fish or two a day. With the river low and clear a quiet, sneaky approach is very important. Light leaders and small floats seems to be making the difference between a couple of fish and a shut out. We have been down sizing the floats to the 6 gram or smaller size, based off the diagram below.
Also the streamer bite has been better than I would have expected for this time of the season. We moved a few really nice brown trout and even landed a couple. The steelhead have been chasing a stripped fly as well. A smaller style streamer in a Minnow pattern has been best. Try trying a few Closer’s on a heavy gauge steamer hook.
With this mild winter weather and the rivers at winter low levels now is the time to get out and enjoy some quality time with Mother Nature!
We currently have three federal permits and have access to all the PM launches. Give us a call for a Steelhead or Trout Trip, 231-228-7135 or contact us on the web. The Pere Marquette is one of our favorite rivers to fish during the winter and spring months. Make sure to check back as we up date this river report page more frequently over the next 6 months.
