The Pere Marquette fishing report for late February continues to be decent to good. The Pere Marquette River is currently low and clear, but should get a slight bump in flows due to the recent warmups and the warmer forecast and rain for this upcoming week. Water temps have been anywhere from 34 to almost 37 degrees recently.
The Pere Marquette fishing report for steelhead was slower this week as the warmups have started to pull some of the winter fish into their spawning activities. There were signs of spawning activity throughout the section we floated. We focused on a lot of varying water types and fished a ton of water Sunday and managed to find a few steelhead and several trout to play with. Most of the fish we found were still in the deeper/slower winter water and very few fish in transitional seems. All our fish were tightly hanging to cover as well. Best flies were still eggs in orange, peach, and smaller black or tan wiggle nymphs. With warmer weather projected for this week and a chance for rain the deck will get reshuffled again and we should see another push of fresh fish entering the system.
One of the keys yesterday was effectively covering the water as the overall number of biting fish were on the first few good presentations. Working the float around the wood and slowly swinging your fly out from under the structure gave us a fish or two we wouldn’t have found otherwise. Having a good pair or polarized sunglasses is key to being able to see the structure allowing you to effectively fish around it and in it. Jeff Topp’s recent blog post about the Sunrise Silver Mirror lens from Costa are a perfect choice. Make sure to read the blog and check out Costa’s products at your local fly shop. If you want to see the latest and greatest you can just stop by the Warren Show and try out the new 580G Sunrise lens for yourself.
Over the next few weeks the fishing should begin to ramp up as early spring fish find their way home to the Pere Marquette River providing some of the best fishing for this time of year. As the day length grows and air temps increase over the next few weeks the spring run should start accelerating in a positive direction. We currently have three federal permits and have access to all the launches while all the while enjoying the fishing here in the spring. Give us a call 231-228-7135 or contact us on the web.
