The Pere Marquette fishing report for the first week in March is fishing decent to good. The Pere Marquette River has dropped and cleared from the high water event from late February.
Spring Steelhead Fishing
The Pere Marquette fishing report for spring steelhead has the typical early March program. Some fish have started to spawn, as water temps have warmed up enough for the winter fish to start searching out the early gravel areas. With a few fresh fish in the holes and slots. But seems like we are in a holding pattern until the spring push of fish arrives.
Also have found a few drop backs already. Drop-backs are steelhead that have already spawned and are the way back to lake Michigan. Drop-backs are super aggressive and are known to take streamers really well.
Yesterday we started a more traditional early spring weather program, receiving a few inches of snow and colder temperatures for the next 5 days or so. This will push fish back into the slower pools, until we get a warm up again. If you fish the next few days, focus on smaller patterns. Smaller eggs and nymphs. With dropping water and dropping temps , you need to downsize the offering.
Over the next few weeks the fishing on the Pere Marquette should remain solid, and really start to fish well on the next warm up. A good mixture of steelhead fishing and brown trout streamer trips are available. A list of open dates can be found on the Manistee River Reports page. We currently have three federal permits and have access to all the launches. Give us a call 231-228-7135 or contact us on the web.
