Trout fishing this spring has been a challenge on the Upper Manistee. After a cold start, we have finally had some extended warmth and this has helped our hatches, causing more fish to look up. It’s been bug soup the past week with the last few Hendrickson spinners finishing up along with sulphurs, caddis, mahoganies, and stoneflies.
It looks like the weather should stay warmer and dry which should help make for more consistent fishing. On cloudy or rainy days streamers can provide some opportunities. Chestnut lamprey patterns as well as smaller flashy streamers on brighter days have gotten most of our looks. Keep shuffling through colors if you’re not getting chases as colors have been day to day.
