Target Species
Salmon fishing in northern Michigan primarily targets King, Coho, Pink, and Atlantic salmon.
- King Salmon: Available in late July and early August, King salmon are a powerhouse and are often targeted with large, flashy streamers. These fish are fresh from Lake Michigan and can be caught below Tippy Dam on the Manistee River, the Betsie River, and the Pere Marquette River. By September, Kings begin to spawn, and their aggressiveness diminishes, shifting our focus to nymphing and egg patterns.
- Coho Salmon: These salmon arrive in October and are more aggressive feeders than King salmon. We target them with stripped flies, similar to those used for trout, through November.
- Atlantic Salmon: Available in the AuSable River below Foote Dam, the Atlantic salmon run peaks in October and November. Known for their beautiful coloration, these fish provide an exciting challenge for anglers.
- Pink Salmon: Occasionally found during the fall, these salmon add variety to your fishing experience.
Where We Fish
Our salmon fishing trips focus on three of the most iconic rivers in northern Michigan:
- Manistee River: This river offers an exceptional salmon fishing experience, especially below Tippy Dam. King salmon begin their migration here in late July, and fishing is at its best through August. The river’s wide, deep pools provide excellent opportunities to target these powerful fish.
- Betsie River: Known for its accessibility and great salmon runs, the Betsie River is another prime location for targeting King and Coho salmon, especially in the lower stretches.
- Pere Marquette River: This river has no barriers to salmon migration, allowing these fish to travel further upstream. The Pere Marquette offers fantastic fishing for both King and Coho salmon.
- AuSable River: Known for its Atlantic salmon run in October and November, the AuSable provides a unique fishing experience for those seeking something different.
