Fishing Techniques:

  • Swinging Flies (Spey or Switch Rods):
Swinging flies, particularly with spey or switch rods, is one of the most exciting ways to target steelhead. We use Skagit-type lines, sink tips, and a variety of flies to entice steelhead into striking.
  • Indicator Fishing:
This method involves fishing with a float, often with an egg pattern or nymph suspended just above the riverbed. It’s a prime technique during the colder months when steelhead are less aggressive but still hungry.
  • Chuck & Duck (Bottom Bouncing Nymphs):
In certain conditions, we use a technique called “chuck and duck,” where a weighted line and nymphs are bounced along the bottom. This method is particularly effective in deeper runs and provides consistent action, especially when steelhead are feeding on eggs or nymphs.

Target Species

Steelhead fishing is available almost year-round in Michigan, with the prime season running from October through May.

Fall (October – December):
The fall is one of the most exciting times to target steelhead. As the salmon run winds down, steelhead enter the rivers in numbers. October, November, and December are prime months, with steelhead at their most active. The fish are fast, powerful, and acrobatic—often leaping and running hard which makes for exciting fishing.

Winter (January – March):
Winter steelhead fishing can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. While water temperatures hover near freezing, these fish continue to feed. The slower, more methodical approach of nymphing and indicator fishing works well during this time, with our guides expertly helping you place your flies where the fish are most likely to bite.

Spring (March – May):
As spring approaches, the steelhead begin spawning. Fishing during this period offers a unique experience as the fish move in and out of their spawning beds. In March and April, the rivers are full of active steelhead, and the fishing can be particularly intense as these fish are focused on feeding and preparing for spawning.

Where We Fish

One of the most iconic steelhead rivers in Michigan, the Manistee River offers a big-water experience with wide, deep runs perfect for steelhead. The river features a variety of sections, from the fast-moving tailwaters to slower, deep pools. We typically launch from one of several locations along the river and fish a stretch of around 10-12 miles.

As you fish, you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of northern Michigan’s wilderness. Expect to see bald eagles, raptors, whitetail deer, ducks, and geese, as well as the occasional beaver or mink. The varied landscapes—from the hills to backwater sloughs—make for an unforgettable backdrop to your fishing trip.

Throughout the year, we target steelhead in different sections of the river, including behind salmon redds in the fall and in deeper, slower runs in the winter and spring. The river’s vast size and diverse habitat support excellent steelhead populations, making it a prime location for flyfishing.
