Salmon Fry are an important food source to be aware of during the Spring. The Fry and Eggs Pattern imitates this part of the Salmon Life cycle. Both spring steelhead and brown trout will feed on these easy meals. This quick tie is set up with a stinger hook, so you can also swing this pattern. Changing the bead color based on water color I think is important too, this is a hot spot in the pattern and fish will key in on certain colors. Also make sure to try pink in the spring.
Fry and Egg Material List
- Cotter Pin – 1/16 x 1″
- Olive UTC 210
- Clear Cure Dumbell Eyes 6mm – color Steel
- Hook = Gamakatsu C14s Size 2-4
- Whiting Soft Hackle with Chickabou, dyed on grizzly: silver doctor
- DNA Flash – Pink & Blue
- Polar Flash – Pearl
- Senyo Laser Dubbing – white, silver minnow, or gray
- 6mm Trout Bead – Oregon Cheese
Attach your eyes onto your potter pin, for the cotter pin we actually cut the 1″ in half. These Salmon Fry are small. Also attach your Power Pro loop for your trailing hook. Any smaller trailering hook will work. Because of high spring water flows I like the C14s. This hook is extremely strong.
Attach your size 6mm Trout Bead underneath the Potter Pin. Use 10-12 lbs. mono. This will resemble the egg sac the Salmon fry and alevin’s use for nutrients during this phase of their life cycle.
Tie in two chickabou feathers for a slim tail
Add two more feathers from the Whiting Farms Soft Hackle Saddle. Like to use a broader feather here, from lower on the saddle. Matching the length of the chickabou feathers.
Mix a small amount of DNA Flash and Polar Flash for a flash wing over the lop of the Fry and Eggs Pattern
Add your Senyo Laser Dub to the top of the Fry and Eggs Pattern
