Pere Marquette Fishing report for mid April has the Pere Marquette in excellent shape. With the water dropping and cleaning up the Pere Marquette is fishing really well for brown trout.
The rain we had over the past week brought the river up quite a bit. The color of the river looks excellent but its high. It has crested and is dropping but it is still to high to wade. The river should be wadable later this week if we don’t get to much rain.
Steelhead fishing has been ok. The peak has come and gone but there are a few fresh fish around. With a Steelhead still spawning and exiting the river look to the streamers for your drop back steelhead fun. The brown trout and the drop back steelhead are liking the streamers right now. With lots of minnows in the river the fish are keying on them. Make sure to tie up a few Hat Tricks (video below). Also swinging small fry patterns on sunny days will get you grabs when they will not aggressively chase, make sure to try the Fry and Eggs too.
Yesterday was the first day that we have seen a ok stonefly hatch. As the water warms look for trout starting to looking up and going on a insect bite. The river looks to be setting up nice for some good dry fly fishing in the near future. Hendricksons should start to pop any day as well.
If your fishing this week be safe out there. Lots of new trees and log jams in the river.
We currently have three federal permits and have access to all the Pere Marquette launches. Give us a call for a Trout Trip, 231-228-7135 or contact us on the web. The Pere Marquette is one of our favorite rivers to fish during the spring months, open dates are available. With some of the best dry fly months approaching, especially the Gray Drakes, book an evening float chasing trout on dries.
