Pere Marquette Fishing report for Spring Steelhead. The river is low and clear. VERY CLEAR! I am not sure if it will remain this way with the snow melt and a hint of spring conditions in the forecast this week . I would think that the river should rise and and color up this up coming week with the above freezing temps and snow melt. Also hoping that this change in water will help our spring run fish find there way home.
The stealth approach was the key for us yesterday. Staying way back off the runs. Moving slowly and quietly was the game. Fishing was better than I would have expected. We ran into a few steelhead yesterday. All of our fish came on floats. Glo bugs and beads where the ticket. The steelhead we did find where in the slow deep winter water. We found most of our fish in water that was 5-8 feet deep and slow. Straight runs fished better than the big curves.
As far as the trout bite….. There wasn’t one. We didn’t see a brown or rainbow all day. I feel like this is about to change. Spring conditions should be just around the corner and with that will bring the trout bite on. More food in the river with the spawn coming and the insects waking up should change this. Also don’t be afraid to fish a nymph under the floats. Caddis and stone fly nymphs should trigger a bite or two in the near future.
