SA Frequency Magnum Glow Line

The SA Frequency Magnum Glow Line is a specialty line for those that enjoy the pursuit of big brown trout in the dark.  I have been fortunate to use this fly line guiding since it’s release.   Scientific Anglers is based in Midland, Mi.  This glow line was tested by the pros on the AuSable and Manistee Rivers.  This is home of some of the best night time fisherman in the country.  Michigan has had a long history of night fishing because of some of our mayfly hatches. Some believe mousing was actually created by anglers in Michigan.

Better Dead Drifts

The SA Frequency Magnum Glow Line main goal is to help anglers achieve a better dead drift.  One of the secrets to hooking big brown trout is having a perfect drift.  Big browns are big for one reason, they are wary.  One of the most difficult things about fishing in the dark, is knowing what your fly is doing.  The SA Frequency Magnum Glow Line is charged with a headlamp or small UV light. You  actually see what your line is doing. This works even in some of the darkest corners where the big trout live.

Short Leader

The Pro’s of the SA Frequency Magnum Glow Line is that it’s set up on the Magnum Taper. This is an aggressive weight forward fly line.  The SA Frequency Magnum Glow Line is also a half-size heavier by design. This helps you load your rod, making short casts easier.  When the lights are out, the shorter the cast the better your going to do. No need to set up 60 feet away from your target. Match this taper up with a short stiff leader.  A 7 foot, 0X leader will turn over a big Hex pattern and most moderate sized mouse / frog patterns.

Glowing Line

The glow of this line also doesn’t  spook fish anymore than any other fly line.  If you cast too far and  line the fish that is feeding, they normally can tell that your there.  I haven’t seen the glow line turn fish off more or less than another other fly line I’ve used in the dark.  We try to only pass our fly or leader over the feeding trout.

I asked Steve Pels who works on some of the busiest sections of the AuSable about the Glow Line and here is what he said:

I occasionally get an odd look from my clients when I pull the Glow Line reels out. There is some concern about the glow spooking the fish. I can safely say that I haven’t been able to put a rising fish down after dark with this line. However, any fly line or errant cast can in fact put fish down – just not as a direct result of the line glowing. I am primarily using The Frequency Magnum Glow on highly pressured sections of the AuSable and Upper Manistee rivers with great success.

Specialty Fly Line

The only negative of this fly line is it’s truly a specialty line.  It’s meant to fish in the dark, so if you use it year round your going to wear out the glow.   Only buy this line for your summer trout fishing opportunities.  I don’t use this line when I’m day time fishing.  I prefer to have my MPX Taper or the New Infinity Taper working during the day time hours.

Ask your Local Fly Shop for the SA Frequency Glow Line, if your having trouble finding it please comment below and let us know.  We are happy to help, enjoy the chase in the dark and be safe wading the swamps of Northern Michigan.
